Eagles coach, Samson Siasia has embarked on a drive to build a standing team made up of entirely home based players.
Siasia plans to invite selected players from the local league for a long camping exercise. And according to him, he hopes to raise a solid team of home based players that will give their European counterparts a run for their money in the national team.

“We need to have a bedrock for the national team. The only way to go about it is to have a standing Eagles team made of local boys,” said Siasia yesterday.
He said that his brief stint with Heartland FC of Owerri gave him an opportunity to observe the home-based players in action and he already has a dossier on some of the players he intend to invite.
It was learnt that these players will be in camp and from there they will be allowed to go and play for their clubs. By February 2011, in the calculation of Siasia, a team would have emerged and they are likely to play a series of friendly games to test their mettle.
Nigeria Football Federation it was gathered is supportive of the idea with the hope that it will stimulate competition for shirts in the national team. Nigeria has no standing team made up of local players and this was why for two consecutive editions of the CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) Nigeria have failed to qualify.
